What is a Wedding Content Creator?

Updated: Sep 17

Since late 2022, wedding content creators have surged in popularity, becoming an exciting addition to wedding day vendors. But what exactly do they do, and how are they different from traditional vendors like photographers and videographers?

What is a wedding day content creator?

A wedding content creator focuses on capturing the authentic, behind-the-scenes moments of your wedding day—using just a smartphone. Their job isn’t to create polished images like a photographer or videographer. Instead, they focus on the fleeting, raw moments that often go unnoticed with a candid view of your day through short video clips.

With the rise of video content on social media, it’s no surprise that couples are eager to document these moments on their wedding day. By hiring a dedicated content creator, you relieve your wedding party and family from the pressure of capturing every detail. This way, everyone can be fully present without needing to pull out their phones.

As a Boston wedding photographer, I love working with content creators! I think it’s an excellent way to capture your day in a totally new way. Not only do you have great content to share on your social media accounts, but you also get to relive all the special moments of your day even if you don’t use social media.

Wedding Content Creator vs. Videographer: What's the Difference?

While both a videographer and a wedding content creator capture memories, they do so in different ways. A videographer is typically hired to create a polished, cinematic video of the day that is around 5 minutes in length. They typically don’t provide raw footage besides potentially your full ceremony and speeches. With a content creator, you often receive a collection of all the images and videos from a smartphone. They are unedited clips, quick snaps, and behind-the-scenes footage delivered as quickly as the next day.

Beyond that, content creators will typically create social media reels, stories, or shorts for you to share right away on your social media. Of course, each content creator offers a unique package, so timelines and deliverables can vary, but that’s the general idea: instant, authentic memories.

Will a Content Creator Get in the Way of My Photographer?

This is a common concern, but from my experience, the answer is no! Content creators are usually capturing those behind-the-scenes moments in a way that doesn’t interfere with the main action. They’re often positioned nearby but never in the way of the photographer or videographer. A great content creator will be able to work alongside the rest of your vendor team to make sure your day is captured from every angle without ever feeling intrusive.

What Equipment Does a Content Creator Use?

Unlike photographers or videographers who come with full camera setups, content creators keep it simple. Most use just a smartphone, maybe paired with a stabilizer or gimbal for smoother shots. I don’t think content creators should use professional cameras—that’s stepping into photography territory, which can cause confusion. The beauty of a content creator is in the ease and authenticity they capture with minimal gear.

Are Content Creators for the Couple or the Vendor Team?

Content creators can be hired for either! I’ve worked with creators hired by the couple, where they arrive after the bride is done with hair and makeup to capture everything from the getting-ready moments through to the reception’s dances and toasts. But I’ve also seen content creators hired by vendors—especially florists, planners, and décor specialists—to document the setup, installation, and final results before the ceremony starts.

This is particularly beneficial for vendors who want to showcase their work for social media or online portfolios. A great example of a vendor consistently doing this is Something Borrowed Event Decor (@somethingborrowedeventdecor), who often creates reels of their beautiful event setups. While Emily, the lead designer, takes the majority of the content for their page, she's hired Content Creators for a few weddings this year to capture the process which allows her to solely focus on the set up of the event, knowing the creator is getting all the necessary footage.

Why Consider Hiring a Wedding Content Creator?

A content creator won't replace your videographer or photographer—but it will add a new perspective to your team! Getting your full gallery from your photographer or a video from your videographer can take up to 8 weeks. By hiring a content creator, you can relive those moments (and have plenty of content to share) the very next day.

A great content creator will work alongside your vendor team to capture all of your moments on your big day! If you are in the Boston area I highly recommend The Social FRM and Ever After Social! I have personally worked with both of them and they offer amazing content creation services and packages!
