As a wedding photographer, I get to witness countless beautiful moments throughout a couple’s wedding day. However, one of the most overlooked moments of the day is a reception room reveal! If you’re not familiar with this term, let me explain.
A reception room reveal is when the newlyweds get a private viewing of their reception space typically at the end of cocktail hour. This gives you a chance to see your reception space and appreciate all the decor and details you’ve planned for months (if not years!) before any guests are allowed in. This has become one of my favorite moments of the day to photograph and something I think you should consider!
The Big Reveal
I am sure you have spent a lot of time envisioning how all of your reception decor and details will come together, but you haven’t seen it all completely set up. That is why I love the reception reveal! I have found it to be an incredibly emotional and exciting moment, but one a lot of couples skip. As a photographer, it’s a joy to capture the pure excitement on your faces as you take it all in and have a few private minutes with just the two of you!
Benefits of a Reception Room Reveal
Take it All In: Walking into your reception without the distraction of guests allows you to absorb every detail and appreciate the hard work that went into making your vision a reality. You can walk around without interruption and really get a good look at everything set up!
Practice Makes Perfect: This is an excellent opportunity to practice your grand entrance and first dance in the actual space. Since you probably haven’t been in the reception area since your initial venue tour, this run-through can help ease any nerves and ensure everything goes smoothly once the guests arrive.
Time to Thank Your Coordinator or Planner: The reception reveal is also a perfect time to talk with your wedding coordinator planner and thank them for their efforts! This moment often gets missed otherwise! You have probably worked closely for months to bring everything to fruition so it’s a great way to really express your gratitude for their hard work.
Detail Photography: Having a reception reveal gives some extra time to capture stunning photos of the reception setup before it’s filled with guests and while it is still filled with daylight. These images are wonderful keepsakes, showcasing all the beautiful details and decor you’ve chosen including place settings, bar signs, escort cards, floral arrangements, and more!
Take a Breather: By taking a few moments to enjoy your reception space with your partner, you can reduce some of the stress and chaos that often accompanies wedding days. It’s a chance to take a deep breath, relax, and soak in the moment with just the two of you.
Planning Your Timeline to Include a Reception Room Reveal
When planning your wedding day timeline, consider allowing time for a reception room reveal. Talk to your venue and coordinator to see if it’s possible. Not all venues offer the opportunity for a reception reveal, but I’d love to see more couples have the chance to experience it. Usually, it is best during the cocktail hour or before your ceremony depending on when your first look and portraits will be. Learn more about creating your wedding day timeline.
I have found it is always a really special moment that is well worth the time it takes! I recommend about 5-10 minutes for a reception reveal, but you can always ask for more. Some venues may give you a private moment away with your favorite drink and some apps set aside for just the two of you!
If you’re in the midst of planning your wedding, I hope this post has inspired you to consider a reception room reveal. It’s a moment of calm, connection, and appreciation of your decor that you’ll cherish for years to come. As your photographer, I can’t wait to capture the look of pure joy on your faces when you see your reception space for the very first time.
